Shock revelations, brought to light under the Freedom of Information Act, have suggested more than 100,000 pension savers could be hit with six-figure tax bills following tiny uplifts to their pension.

Investment provider and wealth manager Hargreaves Lansdown has called for the Lifetime Allowance to be scrapped as news emerges that it may be causing damage to the NHS by hitting GP numbers.

The tax collected from individuals breaching the Lifetime Allowance (LTA) has rocketed by £100m since it was introduced in 2006, with the latest figures showing that £110m in tax was collected from individuals exceeding the allowance during 2016/17, compared with less than £10m in 2006/7 when the LTA was introduced.
