CISI appoints new Guernsey branch President
The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) has appointed Paul Garrard, Chartered FCSI as President of the CISI’s Guernsey branch.
The CISI is a 45,000 strong global professional body for Financial Planners, wealth managers and capital markets professionals.
It has a network of 23 branch committees throughout the UK whose main role is to support the provision of continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities, social and networking events for CISI members, helping to ensure their skills and competence are up to date.
In addition to serving on the CISI’s Guernsey regional committee, Mr Garrard has almost 30 years’ experience in the financial services profession.
Known as ‘Boris’ to virtually everybody that knows him, he joined the then Kleinwort Benson in 1989 and has spent the majority of his working life there, initially gaining a solid grounding in the settlements department before moving to investment management.
Following the merger with SG Hambros he now heads the Channel Island investment management department for Kleinwort Hambros, where the team oversees a range of investment strategies for private and institutional clients.
Mr Garrard joined the Securities Institute in 1996 and worked his way through the Diploma exams before joining the Guernsey Committee.
As a long serving member of the Committee, he has held several roles including press officer, secretary, education officer and Vice President.
Outside of work he was described as “a family man with a fiancée and four teenagers at home and is a keen sportsman.
He is a regular tennis player, which along with his resemblance to former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker, led to his nickname and skier.
Mr Garrard said: “I am honoured to take on this role and would like to thank Patrick Millar, Chartered FCSI for his excellent branch leadership over the last two years.
“My objectives for the year will be to build on existing strategies, particularly relating to the professional development and education of our members and students.
“Helping to shape our events programme is also an important part of the role.
“Two branch forthcoming events include 26 November ‘Investing in the Internet…The Evolution Comes’ with Gregg Guerin from First Trust and 24 January 2019 ‘Passive vs Active Investment’ with Simon Brett, Chief Investment Officer, Parmenion and we look forward to welcoming members to these events.”
Jim Winter, CISI head of UK business development, said: “We are delighted to welcome Paul as our new Guernsey regional branch President and we would like to thank Patrick Millar for his leadership and helping to build the branch which today stands at almost 600 members.
“We look forward to supporting Paul with his membership plans.”
