The April meeting of the IFP's Manchester branch welcomed Colin Kemp of Christian Aid as its speaker.
Mr Kemp spoke passionately at the IFP conference at the Celtic Manor in 2011 and again inspired delegates on the topic of charitable giving. Specifically, he highlighted how planners can build this into their clients' financial plans both in life and in death.
Colin was an IFA earlier in his career giving him insight into the profession as well as good knowledge of the tax breaks that charitable gifting can provide.
Delegates explored how to get clients to open up about charitable donations. Asking the right questions about a client's charitable motivations can get them to confide in their planner in a way like no other.
Mr Kemp reviewed some of the main tax reliefs such as gift aid and IHT planning. He also gave examples of charitable giving he has been involved with and the reasoning behind some of individual's philanthropy, such as wanting to leave a legacy.
The presentation was well received by delegates who felt more comfortable approaching this subject with their own clients as a result.
