In hindsight, I might not have put on an event in the middle of the summer, especially during a heatwave but it just goes to show that a good topic and speaker will always draw in the crowds, reports chairman Wesley Harrison CFPcm.
Our speaker for July was Elizabeth Eyre of Barlow Robbins a local and well-respected private client lawyer and an active board member of Surrey STEP. The title of the talk was the well-known crowd pleaser: Powers of Attorney.
Overall, there were 18 attendees which is a good turnout for the Surrey branch and Elizabeth talked through the various Powers of Attorney past and present, what is and is not possible with a Power of Attorney, and how the office of the public guardian gets involved.
I have come to realise that if the audience really engages with the speaker then there will always be sensible questions. The best of the bunch was about gifting assets via a power of attorney, which I always thought
was too difficult to pursue. A good turnout and interesting discussion.
