DEC Myanmar Earthquake Appeal
The Quilter Foundation, the charity arm of wealth manager Quilter, has donated £25,000 to the Disasters Emergency Committee Myanmar Earthquake Appeal to support vital humanitarian aid following the earthquake that struck Myanmar last month.
The 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on 28 March, the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912.
At least 3,700 people have died and more than 5,000 are injured – many of them children. The earthquake aftershocks have damaged or destroyed almost 50,000 homes, displacing around 200,000 people.
Coming on top of an existing humanitarian crisis, the earthquake has left millions without access to safe shelter, clean water, and urgent medical care.
Steven Levin, chief executive officer of Quilter and chair of The Quilter Foundation, said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragic earthquake in Myanmar. At a time of immense suffering, it is vital for the international community to come together to deliver humanitarian support.
“The Quilter Foundation is proud to contribute to the DEC’s appeal and to help provide immediate relief to those whose lives have been impacted by this disaster.”
The Disasters Emergency Committee unites 15 of the UK’s leading aid charities to raise funds quickly and effectively in times of crisis. Its member charities and local partners are on the ground in Myanmar and neighbouring regions, working to provide emergency assistance including food, water, sanitation, protection, and trauma support.
Every pound donated by the UK public to the DEC appeal will be matched by the UK government through its Aid Match scheme, up to £5m. This matching will double the impact of public donations and ensure that those most in need can be reached quickly.
